Likotinara is a a quiet, traditional village within the region of Apokoronas, situated at an altitude of 290 meters south of Kefalas, at the eastern end of the Vamos hills and southeast of the Roupakias forest. Due to its location and altitude, the village enjoys excellent views of the Gulf of Almiros, and on a clear day one can see the entire northern coastline of the Prefecture of Rethimno up to Kouloukonas (known as Tália Ori in ancient times). which is situated at the foot of the White Mountains and is one of the greenest regions of Crete. The village is situated at a short distance from both the village of Sellia and the larger village of Kefalas. The town of Vamos with all its shops, tavernas and the health centre is 6 km away. Although the houses of the settlement are scattered, many are excellent examples of folk architecture, some of which have been repaired and are kept in good condition. On the slope below the village one can find several palm trees, which have given this place the name Vayoniá (the leaves of the tree are known as váya in Greek). The locals do not know how these tropical trees grew there, so it is likely their seeds were brought over by migratory birds, which pass through this area every year travelling from and to Africa. The whole area east of the village is known as “Gremna” and is a protected ecosystem under the Natura 2000 Network. Likotinara also includes the northern part of Kalivaki beach (east of Exopolis and north of Vlychada), where the church of Agia Kyriaki has been built, next to a German military outpost, whose purpose was to control the entrance to the port of Georgioupoli Likotinara is just 34 km from Chania.
